Introducing… Holly

Hi everyone,

Holly here, one sixth of GOLD team Rwanda 2019. Let me introduce myself…

I am an assistant Brownie leader down in Bodmin, Cornwall (although originally from the West Midlands). I am not much of a candy sweet person but you can never go wrong with a good bit of Cadburys chocolate. One random fact about me is that I have experienced Accident and Emergency in both Belgium and India (and let me tell you, they were both very different experiences!) but never the UK (don’t worry everyone, I really am not that interested in visiting Rwandan A&E this summer!!)

I am the team Rwanda treasurer. At present, I have little experience of being a treasurer but I do enjoy throwing myself into activities that I have no prior familiarity with. I love the challenge of getting my teeth into a new role and learning a new skill (I have a bank account, that’s a good enough place to start, right?!).

Out of guiding, my day job sees me working in flood risk management, meaning thankfully, not every day is stuck in the office. Getting out and about, whether that be close to home or somewhere exotic, exploring is definitely one of my favourite things to be doing.

What is your favourite memory of Guiding I am asked? Well, that’s probably the hardest question of all, I have quite a few to choose from! From a week long camp in Wales as a guide, to all night discos as a Ranger or becoming a leader and taking brownies on their first sleepover, I have so many memories that I could choose from. One of my favourite photos was taken on International Women’s Day back in 2017. I was a long term winter volunteer at Sangam World Centre and had the opportunity to take part in an IWD march with the local community. My banner you can see translates as ‘Women are not just flowers, but also fire’, A simple message that I truly love.

I think what I am most excited about for GOLD is the opportunity to meet so many new people. I love how so many of my closest friends are the ones that in fact, live the furthest away from me who I have met on guiding adventures. I hope through GOLD and the training’s that we will be involved with whilst on project, there will be many more opportunities to connect and share stories, far and wide.

Bring on Rwanda 2019!
