Yesterday saw us travel in the afternoon to a boarding school about 2 hours away from Kigali. We were training the Scouts and Guides at the school (they do combined sessions but take a separate promise) following the end of their lessons and before the start of their evening prep. Not all of the girls knew we were coming so there were quite a few surprised faces! The aim of the session was again leadership and teamwork.

The girls at this school had good English and wanted to do the session without translators. They did a great job! It was one of our bigger trainings with over 70 girls attending. We did a long line of charades which again changed numerous times but the girls understood that this was down to communication. We repeated and the change was less noticeable following greater concentration and accuracy in passing on the message.
We split into six groups for them to have a go at ‘island hopping’. They had four sheets of paper to get the whole team across an 8m stretch. First they could discuss tactics and come up with a plan of action to achieve the goal. All teams managed it – even with Dodo sneakily moving bits of paper!

Our session was only short but we also had time to have a discussion with the girls about what makes a good leader. They had some fantastic ideas – risk taker, confidence builder, opportunity seeker. We were very impressed with their innovative ideas. All of them have high aspirations for their future lives and careers. It was wonderful to hear that they love going to school and want to become a surgeon or a lawyer in the future. They were brilliant young women and will all make excellent leaders in the future.

Today it’s our last official day of project – the final day for the two GOLD Rwanda 2019 teams. We are really looking forward to spending the day with our new friends, evaluating the project, celebrating in style and maybe even having a few surprises up our sleeves! 🥳💛
