Monday was our penultimate day of training here in Rwanda. It was a national holiday following the Eid celebrations of Sunday but the troop based at a school in the Muhanga District were so excited to see us we went to train them on their day off!
We were accompanied by the GOLD team but also had Petite the District Commissioner for the area as well as Rachael a member of the district who now lives in Kigali. They were so happy to be there and joined in all of the activities whilst encouraging the girls and aiding translation.

The aims of the session were to develop the leadership and communication skills of the girls involved. We decided to do this through various activities including the favourite of charades down the line to highlight communication and how it is important to be accurate and precise.
We moved on to designing a perfect leader and what characteristics they should possess. The girls drew a picture of their leader and annotated it to highlight the skills the leader should have.

Teamwork games and energisers included teapot tag (a new one learnt at GOLD breifing), human knot, sitting in a chair whilst in a circle as well as challenges in pairs to stand up and sit down in various ways.

When leaving to get back to the bus we were followed the whole way with clapping and singing to say goodbye. It was a very special moment and so lovely. Once driving off they were all waving and smiling – we could see how much fun they had had!

Back at the apartment we had discussions about our onward travel and had a think about organising some things. There is so much in Rwanda to see and we are all leaving at slightly different times so it was good to all plan together. We had had such a busy couple of days that we decided to go out for dinner. We had been recommended a burrito place on the other side of town by Corinne from GOLD Peru so thought we would check it out. We had burritos and quesadillas followed by a trip to the ice cream parlour upstairs – it was such a lovely and enjoyable evening.
