Yesterday our training was in the afternoon so we decided to head out to explore the area around the convention centre. We can see this from the AGR and it’s a circular building which lights up at night. It hosts events and conferences throughout the year. For ease and speed, we got a taxi from Gikondo straight there.
The convention centre was very official and hosting an event for people involved in African food distribution. They let us through security but unfortunately we weren’t able to have a look inside. We were shown to the outside balcony where we enjoyed the views of Kigali that we were hoping for.

Looking for views over the city was the aim of the morning! Nextdoor there is a shopping area, offices and a hotel called Kigali Heights. It’s an 8 story building and we had been advised you could also see good views from here. We found a lift and to the top floor we headed. Again, we weren’t really sure if we should have been there but we made it to the top and back down without any problem!
Our final stop before going back was to a bookshop with a rooftop cafe. Holly had read about it online and it was described as having the best views in Kigali. It didn’t disappoint! Views and drinks were both as equally good and allowed us to relax for half an hour before what was going to be a long afternoon of traveling to training.
Once back in Gikondo we had lunch and then waited for the minibus to come and pick us up. Training today was at a troop based in a boarding school in Nyanze. It was about a two and three quarter hour journey each way but Dodo bought a speaker with her so we listened and sang to some banging tunes!
Once we arrived we were shown to the area we were training in which was next to the basketball courts. The girls all spoke English so we didn’t need translators for everything. The topic today – first aid.
We had decided that it was important to teach the girls the recovery position and CPR. We had a Resuci-Anne donated by a Brownie group near Worcester and this was great and the girls could all have a go following our demonstration. What we taught them was all new to them and they really appeared to understand the importance of it and asked some excellent questions. We hope that they will be able to share their new found skills with their friends and local communities.

Back home again with more songs on the bus! We planned the training session for today and went to bed for our earlier start this morning. We’ll keep you posted about what we get up to!
