A Day in the Life of GOLD Team Rwanda

We have been here for just over a week now and thought it would be nice for you to know a little bit about our routine and what we do on a daily basis.

1. Wake up, cook breakfast and get ready for the day. We have our own kitchen, living area and porch. Our go to breakfast tends to be toast, jam, fruit juice and sometimes scrambled eggs.

2. We always need to make sure that we have enough bottled water to keep us going. There is a shop about half a mile away in Gikondo that sells 19 litres/5 gallons of water for about ÂŁ1.50. We know the shop owners now having been there once a day! Once we have the water we tend to decanter it into smaller bottles so that we can keep it cool in the fridge or even make ice in the freezer. As you can imagine, the water is very heavy to carry so we have come up with a method to make it easier. The bottle goes into a holdall bag and we take a strap each. We change hands multiple times on the journey home!

3. We also have a number of local shops where we can stock up on small things rather than heading to Simba, the supermarket, everyday. The shops sell bread, milk, eggs and fruit juice as well as sauces and tins of things that we can add to our food. There is also a fruit and veg market where we can buy a bigger variety of fresh things for a very good price!

4. When we are heading to training or into town, our journey always starts at the bus stop. First we have to make sure we have enough money on our ‘tap and go’ cards. If not, there is someone we can top it up with at the bus stop. Waiting for a bus can be no time at all but can also take a while. There isn’t really a timetable and we never know when the next bus will come. Buses don’t tend to move on from the bus station until they are completely full so, as you can imagine, this can make things a little variable. Buses also vary in size a lot. Some are the size of a standard UK bus and are really filled to maximum capacity. Others only have 20 seats and no room for standing. If a bus doesn’t come or we are in a rush, there is a taxi rank next door!

5. When walking back from these places the road turns from tarmac to a dust track where we have to dodge the motortaxis. Luckily, they beep their horns in plenty of time to let us know they are coming! At the end of the road we get to our hotel with the beautiful bright green gates and security gentleman who says hello to us every time we enter and leave!

6. We have a few days based at the AGR national headquarters which is just a five minute walk away from where we are staying. We go down the hill with the most beautiful view over Kigali and the convention centre. We take a right and can pretty much see the entrance sign from there. At the bottom of the AGR complex the spectacular views continue for miles!

We are just about to eat a rice dish for tea after a very hot experience at the Expo – an exhibition where people show traditional things from all over the world. There was a fun park for kids and Kat was even given a balloon for free. We treated ourselves to an ice cream to gear ourselves up for the long walk up the hill past Wembley Stadium!!
