Introducing… Alice

Hi everyone,

My name is Alice, I’m 24, and I’m the team leader for GOLD Rwanda 2019! I have been a member of Girlguiding since I was 5 years old and have Brownie and Guide units across the country that I have worked with as I have travelled around for my studies. I am currently a Brownie leader in Durham, whilst I am working on my PhD at Newcastle University, studying the genetic basis of lung cancer.

I am a Queen’s Guide, a peer educator and a member of the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra (NSGSO). I was a participant on the GOLD project to Malawi in 2015 and am so grateful for how my life has changed as a result. I am particularly proud of the work that the girl guides of Malawi have continued to do since their GOLD project finished, teaching girls teamwork, leadership, first aid and ending violence against women.

Being a part of a GOLD project has changed my guiding experience so much for the better, so it is no surprise that I am incredibly excited to be able to lead my team in experiencing GOLD this year! I am also very grateful for the opportunity to work with AGR on the fifth year of their GOLD project, building on the amazing work of previous teams.

My mountain top moment as a member of Girlguiding is undoubtedly being a part of GOLD – the friends, skills and experiences are some of my most treasured memories. I love to hear about what the Malawi girl guides have been up to since we visited as well as catching up with my Malawi GOLD team, who have become an extended family to me.

My role in the GOLD Rwanda team is the leader, so I will be drawing on my past experiences of GOLD to facilitate my team members’ development over the course of the project, as well as liaising with the Rwandan girl guides, my own team members, other GOLD leaders and Girlguiding CHQ to organise and carry out the project. I am excited for the challenge of leading a team and hope to use the experience to prepare myself to lead more trips within Girlguiding.

Lastly my favourite sweets – I’m not much of a sweet person myself but I do love a bit of dark chocolate!

I hope you enjoy keeping up with our GOLD journey over the coming months – thanks for all your support so far!

GOLD love,

Alice
