Yesterday we travelled to GS Burema, a local school just over an hour away from where we are staying. Lots of bumpy roads again, smiling faces and waving to the locals as we went down some steep hills (and up the other side again). We really do appreciate now thay Rwanda is truly the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’!
We arrived to be greeted by the headteacher, Hope, who showed us around the school along with the teacher who supports the Guide group. There are 2864 pupils that attend the school from nursery through to secondary years. During this tour we were followed by about 50 children who were intrigued to see us at their school.

We then waited until the children were ready at 2pm (when they had finished their morning schooling and lunch) and got stuck into the first aid session. A couple of them had already done some first aid training which was helpful for the younger children in the group. We started with the recovery position followed by CPR and split them into smaller groups to practice each. They were fantastic at listening and got each step almost immediately following the demonstration. We were very impressed.

We moved onto slings and bandages showing showing them a triangular bandage and a compression bandage and what you would use each of them for. We followed this activity up with asking them some questions to test their understanding and the order in which you would do things if you came across an accident. They had taken everything on board and we very were pleased with their understanding at the end of the session!

Before we left the school we were shown to the headteachers office to sign the visitors book again. They are very proud of these and getting us to sign them! We then went for multiple photographs in different locations before heading to the bus.

The bus driver kindly took us to a Simba on the way back to Kigali. We have been to quite a few different ones now and are determined to go to as many as we can before we leave! Back at the apartment we cooked rice and a curry which had lots of veg in and was very yummy.
We are now getting ready for training at the AGR. We’re looking forward to meeting the Umuhoza project and the nursery!
