Double Training!

The last 48 hours has been a pretty busy time for us here in Rwanda. Yesterday started with organising our training folders and the formation of our first training plan. We put together some activities for world guiding and women’s rights with our favourite in their – tying a friendship knot. Sophie’s achievement for the week has been learning it with only two practice attempts, we were very impressed!

We hopped on a bus to Kamonyi district where we were greeted by the local district commissioner and taken to a nearby school. We had beautiful views over the valley during our very steep walk down the hill (we were already dreading the walk back up the hill again!)

The girls were very pleased to see us and get stuck into training! They really enjoyed talking about their women’s rights and how it relates to their life in Rwanda. We were pleased to hear how passionate the young women were! As per GOLD traditions we threw in some ‘Wake up and Shake ups’ including ‘Get Loose’ and ‘Bungalow’. They all LOVE to dance and taught us some new moves.

The journey on the way back was rather eventful. Thank goodness we had the district commissioner who helped us get onto what was already an almost full bus. We made it back to the hotel and cooked chips and beans with melted cheese. A lovely home comfort for what was a very busy day!

A late night following preparing our resources for today followed by alarm clocks set for 6.00 ready for our bus to Club Ni Nyampinga at 7.00 sharp. All ready, awake and on the bus we met Safa, Clementine and Dodo who were looking after us for the day. The journey took slightly longer than planned with a few stops along the way but we made it to see lots of smiling faces and waving hands to greet us on arrival.

We were aiming to develop the girls leadership skills. They were aged 3-16 so we decided a series of games and tasks was the way forward. Starting with the ‘Human Knot’ the girls managed to untangle themselves to then tell us about what makes a team and teamwork they participate in. We then got out the parachute and showed them some games with inflatable balls – I think it’s safe to say that this was their favourite bit!

To end with the girls thanked us for coming and showed us some things that they make as part of the project. They make traditional woven baskets and learn how to knit clothes for each other. The girls waited with us for our bus in which time we managed to teach them a song and they enjoyed practicing some English.

Back in Kigali we went shopping to Simba (our favourite supermarket) where we were able to get some treats. We came back to the hotel and all had a relaxing shower, washed clothes and Sophie cooked us a chilli which was amazing! The evening finished off with cake to celebrate Hannah passing her university exams…. well done!!

Tomorrow it’s back to the AGR, keep an eye out for what we get up to. 😀
